How to compare cutting optimizers

Screenshots of cutting optimizers all look alike, so comparisons built on screenshots settle nothing. Four checks do.

First, sheet counts. Run the same cutting list, the same stock and the same kerf through both tools and count what each one needs. It is the whole point of the software and it is measurable in an afternoon. Second, the shape of the free tier against the shape of your week. A cap on calculations per day and a cap on parts per calculation bite very different users. Third, the materials you actually cut. Sheet goods, lengths of timber and rolls of material are three different problems, and not every tool covers all three. Fourth, the file your workflow ends in, whether that is a PDF for the bench or a machine format for a saw.

Both tools make the first check cheap. Cutlistor publishes free tools with no login required, in their words, and Cutlist Evolution's free tier runs unlimited calculations. Nothing below substitutes for running your own list through each.

What Cutlist Evolution offers

Cutlist Evolution is a free browser cutlist optimizer for sheet, linear and roll materials. The free tier allows unlimited calculations of up to 40 parts each, unlimited stock, 3 saved projects and PDF export. Paid plans add trim cuts, edge banding, printable part labels, CSV, SVG, DXF and PTX export, beam saw settings and a material and stock cloud database. A separate true shape nesting optimizer handles irregular contours.

The engine behind it is measured rather than described. Across 2,083 real production jobs it lands on the fewest stock the parts could physically fit into 82% of the time, with a typical result in under two seconds. Head-to-head results against other tools are published in full at smartcut.dev/benchmarks, including the jobs where a competitor ties or wins.

What Cutlistor publishes

Everything in this section is Cutlistor's own published wording, read from cutlistor.com in July 2026. They describe a browser tool for sheet goods, 2D nesting in their words, and linear stock. It optimises rectangular parts. Imports come in by CSV and XLSX, by AI scanning of plans from photos or PDFs, and by 3D CAD import of glTF, GLB or Collada files. Kerf is configurable, grain can be locked on show faces, layouts download as PDF and DXF, stock on hand can be tracked, and team plans publish up to 5 seats with owner, admin and member roles.

Their published free tier, as of the same date: 3 calculations a day, a 20-item cut list limit, CSV and XLSX import capped at 5 rows, and 3 AI scans and 3 CAD imports a month, with no saving and no inventory. Current pricing is on cutlistor.com.

Some things their material did not cover when we read it: roll materials, trim margins, edge banding, an API, and machine formats beyond DXF. Not published is not the same as not possible. It means there was no claim of theirs to quote, so we quote nothing.

What we have not measured

We have not yet run Cutlistor through the head-to-head benchmark suite, so this page makes no claim about how its sheet counts or solve times compare. When that run happens the results will publish at smartcut.dev/benchmarks with the method attached, whatever they show. Until then, the only fair efficiency test is the one you run yourself with your own cutting list.
